Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Monday slammed the Karnataka goverment after police detained the activists of Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti protesting in Belagavi, and said that people will teach them a lesson.
The Karnataka police detained leaders and activists of Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) who were opposing the winter session of Karnataka legislature being held at Suvarna Vidhan Soudha.
“We protest the injustice being done by the government,” said Marathi Ekikaran Samiti in a post on X.
In another post it also asked will the Maharashtra government stand with Marathi brothers.
“Marathi-speaking people in Karnataka had organised a conference. In this country one can live anywhere, go anywhere and organise a conference, but the Karnataka government unleashed a cycle of repression and arrested the MLA, mayor and more than 100 Marathi-speaking brothers and sisters of the Marathi Ekikaran Samiti who had organised the conference. I condemn this,” said Shinde.
Shinde also condemened those trying to remove the statue of Veer Savarkar.
“Veer Savarkar, who sacrificed his life for the country, should be respected. I condemn those who are trying to remove his statue. The people of Maharashtra and Karnataka will teach a lesson to the Karnataka government which is resorting to such repression,” added Shinde.
Whereas, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray demanded that the region be declared a Union Territory.
“Marathi-speaking people in Belagavi are being suppressed. Since yesterday, the situation has been deteriorating in the region. Our party workers are being detained. The previous ‘unconstitutional’ chief minister had promised that they would give extra funds to the Marathi-speaking people living in the disputed territory. What happened to that assurance?” reported PTI quoting Thackeray.
Danve added that there is a BJP government in Maharashtra and at the Centre, therefore, if injustice is being done to Marathi Manoos, then the BJP government of the Centre and Maharashtra should take steps for it.
