Lucknow: The state medical education department has created 87 positions, including that of faculty and residents, across eight newly established departments at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS).
“As many as eight departments were recently approved by the state govt for the institution. Now, the posts have been created, and recruitment will begin soon,” said executive registrar Col Varun Bajpai, while talking to TOI on Tuesday.
“These new departments will give a significant boost in the management of paediatric cases and will further strengthen the aspects of teaching and training, patient care, and research at SGPGIMS,” he added.
The departments of paediatric endocrinology, paediatric urology, paediatric nephrology, paediatric cardiovascular and thoracic surgery (under Saloni Heart Centre for children), telemedicine and digital health, head and neck surgery, infectious diseases, and orthopaedics were recently added to the institute.
Director Prof RK Dhiman said, “This will facilitate the expansion of super specialty services, especially for paediatric cases in the institute, and further help the diagnosis and treatment of the paediatric population in Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring states.”
To note, children and adolescents from newborn to 18 years constitute around 40% of the population of Uttar Pradesh.
He further said that the department of Infectious Disease will help in the comprehensive management of viral infections and vaccine development. Likewise, the department of head and neck surgery will add surgical specialty for specific surgeries of the head and neck region, while the department of orthopaedics, which already exists under the Apex Trauma Centre, once created, can run MS courses in orthopaedics, which will provide trained surgeons in the field of orthopaedics.
Prof Dhiman also underscored the need for the telemedicine and digital health department. “With learnings from the pandemic period, the SGPGI scaled up the telemedicine ICU services. The new department will start outreach activities of various departments of SGPGIMS and will aid in providing specialised health care to various medical colleges in 75 districts in UP,” he said.
