SRINAGAR: The Kashmir Valley continues to shiver under severe cold as minimum temperatures across the region remain below freezing. The meteorological department has shared that the region, which recently experienced its first major snowfall of the season, is likely to witness two more snow spells in the coming days, potentially boosting tourism activity.

Minimum temperatures in the Valley dipped significantly, with the ski resort of Gulmarg recording the lowest at -10.0°C, followed closely by Sonamarg at -9.9°C and Pahalgam at -9.2°C. In Srinagar, the minimum temperature was recorded at -0.9°C, while other areas such as Qazigund and Kulgam registered even colder nights at -2.8°C and -3.0°C, respectively. The coldest location in the region was Zojila Pass, which recorded a bone-chilling -25.0°C.

In the Jammu region, temperatures were comparatively milder but still reflective of the season’s cold spell. Jammu city recorded a low of 4.6°C, while Katra, a prominent pilgrimage destination, saw a minimum of 6.2°C. Bhaderwah, however, experienced temperatures as low as -3.1°C, and Padder reported -7.0°C.

The Ladakh region, known for its harsh winters, reported some of the coldest conditions, with Drass recording -21.8°C, Kargil -15.3°C, and Leh -13.2°C.

An official from the meteorological department stated that a feeble Western Disturbance is expected to affect the region between January 1 and January 2, potentially bringing light snow to scattered areas. This will be followed by a moderate Western Disturbance from January 3 to January 6, which could result in light to moderate snowfall in many areas and heavier snow in higher altitudes.

The season’s first major snowfall disrupted life across Kashmir, temporarily halting air and road connectivity. Services have since resumed, and the snowfall has drawn significant attention from tourists, who are eager to experience the Valley’s winter charm. According to local tour operators, queries from tourists have surged following the snowfall and predictions of more snow in early January.

Prominent destinations such as Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg are blanketed in thick snow, offering visitors a picturesque “winter wonderland” experience. The hospitality displayed by locals during the snowfall, including opening homes and mosques to stranded travellers, has been widely appreciated and is expected to encourage more visitors.

Tour operators are optimistic that the upcoming snow spells will further enhance tourist arrivals, particularly as Kashmir’s snow-covered landscapes and unique cultural warmth continue to captivate both domestic and international visitors.
