Haryana police have arrested seven persons, including two juveniles, for allegedly lynching a Muslim migrant worker from West Bengal after accusing him of consuming beef.

The deceased was identified as Sabir Malik, 22.

The accused have links to cow vigilante groups. They have been identified as Abhishek, Mohit, Kamaljit, Sahil, and Ravinder, according to the police. The accused were produced in court and sent to police remand.

Police said further investigation is underway.

Malik was beaten to death in Charkhi Dadri district on August 27.

The 22-year-old had come to the state to work as a ragpicker and was living with his wife and two-year-old daughter in Hansawas Khurd village.

Hours before the mob killing, police had been called to the village by men associated with Hindu right-wing groups, who claimed beef was being cooked and consumed in shanties there.

Even as the meat was seized by the police and sent for testing, the assailants took the law into their hands and beat Sabir to death, said Sabir’s relatives, who mentioned that on the same day, they had been called to the police station and asked if they consumed beef.

The assailants called Malik and his friend Aseeruddin to a shop under the pretense of selling empty plastic bottles and assaulted both of them. While Aseeruddin managed to escape, they took Malik on a motorbike to another location and assaulted him again, leading to his death.

His body was later discovered near the shanties where he lived, according to Surajuddin Sarker, the complainant and the victim’s brother-in-law, who also stays in the same shanties.

Sabir was a resident of Miarbheri in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas.

The post-mortem examination was conducted, and his body was handed over to his kin.

Sabir Malik’s relatives said that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called and promised a job for the next of kin.
