Nellore medical college gets nod to start MS general surgery course this academic year, ET HealthWorld

Tirupati: The National Medical Commission gave its nod to the govt medical college at Nellore to start the MS (General Surgery) and MS (Orthopaedics) courses with five seats for the academic year 2024-25.

The orders were issued by Dr Poonam Meena, Deputy Secretary (Medical Education), on Tuesday.

While the govt medical college at Nellore first applied to the National Medical Commission to start the new MS (General Surgery) course with 15 seats and MS (Orthopaedics) with 12 seats in October last year, the Medical Commission disapproved the plea.

Nellore MP Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy, who learnt about the issue, met the Union minister for health and family welfare JP Nadda and also the National Medical Commission chairman BN Gangadhar, and sought their intervention in the issue recently.

Subsequently, a team of officials once again conducted inspections at the govt medical college at Nellore recently and submitted a favourable report to the National Medical Commission, which finally gave the go-ahead to the Nellore medical college to commence the MS (General Surgery) course with five seats and MS (Orthopaedics) with four from this academic year itself.
