In a powerful statement, over 400 media workers and journalists from international newsrooms condemned the Israeli targeting and killing of Palestinian journalists in Gaza and Lebanon.

Released on 30 October, the letter highlights severe implications for press freedom and international law.

Despite widespread denunciation from human rights organisations, Israeli assaults on Palestinian media personnel continue. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reports at least 123 Palestinian journalists killed in Gaza, marking the deadliest period for reporters since 1992, with the Government Media Office in Gaza estimating the toll at 182.

The letter emphasises the critical role Palestinian journalists play, stating, “Palestinian journalists in Gaza have served as the world’s eyes and ears, documenting Israeli attacks such as the deliberate killing of civilians carrying white flags and torture of Palestinians in detention.” These journalists face life-threatening conditions while striving to report amidst severe restrictions.

In October 2024, Israeli military actions killed two Palestinian journalists and injured several others, including Al Jazeera cameraman Ali Al-Attar, who is in critical condition from shrapnel wounds, and Fadi Al-Wahidi, who was shot and left paralysed.. The Israeli military reportedly denied medical evacuation requests for both journalists.

The letter calls for immediate medical evacuations and the protection of those reporting from Gaza and Lebanon, asserting, “No one is more qualified to report and deliver the news from Gaza than local journalists, and it is the professional and personal duty of all journalists and media institutions to ensure their protection.”

The undersigned media workers urge newsrooms to advocate for Palestinian journalists’ safety with the same urgency as for colleagues reporting from conflict zones like Ukraine and Russia. This rallying cry underscores the need for accountability to safeguard press freedom in conflict regions and highlights the vital role of journalists in documenting the truth.
