Shopian, January 11: In a bid to showcase the breathtaking beauty of the region, the administration in south Kashmir’s Shopian district is hosting its first-ever winter carnival at Dobijan, along the historic Mughal Road.

The two-day event, which began today, is named after the legendary love story of Heemal and Nagrai, popularized by British missionary J.H. Knowles in his book Folk Tales of Kashmir.

Dobijan, located just 15 kilometers from Shopian town, is accessed by a winding road cutting through rugged mountains. Surrounded by snow-clad peaks and towering pine trees, this picturesque destination is renowned for its expansive meadow and a hot-water spring believed to have therapeutic properties.

The carnival features a variety of activities, including ice sports and competitions for children. Additionally, an exhibition showcasing local cuisine and crafts is set to attract visitors.

An official from the administration stated that meticulous arrangements have been made to ensure the event’s success.

“This is an elaborate festival aimed not only at highlighting the natural beauty of the area but also at celebrating the region’s rich cultural heritage,” the official said.
