SRINAGAR: The Uttar Pradesh Police have dismissed media reports alleging that a woman from Jammu and Kashmir eloped with a man from Uttar Pradesh after leaving her first husband.
A senior officer from Kotwali Rae Bareli clarified that no complaint or information regarding such an incident has been received. Speaking to Kashmir News Trust, the officer expressed surprise at the widespread coverage, stating, “We have no information about the woman’s location or identity, nor do we know who created this sensationalised story.”
The controversy erupted after a Delhi-based media outlet claimed that a woman from Srinagar had left her first husband to marry a man she met on Facebook from Uttar Pradesh. This report was widely shared by various media platforms in Delhi and Kashmir.
The officer criticised the lack of fact-checking, pointing out that the reports lacked crucial details, such as the woman’s identity or whereabouts. “Every outlet relied on the original story from the Delhi-based source without verifying the facts. As law enforcement, we have no evidence to support the claims made in these reports,” he said.
He further stressed that even if such an incident had occurred, the individuals involved are adults and free to make their own decisions regarding marriage. “Unless a complaint is lodged or a legal issue arises, there is no reason for police intervention,” he added.
