SRINAGAR: Vijay Kumar, the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) for Law and Order in Jammu and Kashmir, is set to take over as the Special Commissioner of Police in Delhi, Delhi newspaper, The Indian Express reported.
Kumar, who has served in the Kashmir Valley for the past five years, steps into his new role at a time when crime and gang-related violence in the national capital have become a contentious issue between the AAP-led state government and the Centre. The Delhi Police falls under the jurisdiction of the Union Home Ministry.
A 1997-batch IPS officer of the AGMUT cadre, Kumar was appointed Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, in December 2019, shortly after the Centre abrogated Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and reorganised it into two Union Territories. Prior to this, he led operations against Naxals in Chhattisgarh and successfully conducted an incident-free general election in South Bastar in 2019.
In Kashmir, Kumar is said to have spearheaded efforts to curtail local recruitment by militant groups and was instrumental in the execution of the “har ghar tiranga” rallies, the peaceful conduct of the District Development Council elections in 2020, G20 events in 2023, Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra, and the annual Amarnath Yatra.
