SRINAGAR: Police on Friday arrested the mother-in-law and husband of a woman who was allegedly murdered and later burnt in a cowshed in the Pahalgam area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district last year.

The woman, Shabnam Akhtar, was killed by her husband, a labourer by profession, and her mother-in-law on October 4 last year, a police officer said.

“The missing woman’s husband, Imran Khan, 35, of Halmulla Hapatnad Aishmuqam Pahalgam, during questioning by police, admitted that he had his wife killed with the help of his mother on 04-10-2024 and then burnt her body in his cowshed,” he said.

After committing the crime, the man had filed a missing report about her wife at Aishmuqam police station and after ten days he retrieved the body from the debris of his cow shed. “He dismembered his wife’s body and then burnt the parts to bury them again,” an official said. The deceased woman was his second wife, and he lived with his first wife after killing her.

“During the investigation, the team recovered hair, some bones, and the deceased woman’s cell phone, which were sealed before the Duty Magistrate for further investigation,” the officer said, adding, “A formal case (FIR No. 01/2025) under sections 103(1) BNS and 61(2) BNS has been registered against the accused and his mother, Noor Hassan, wife of Mouz-ud-Din Khan.”

Both accused have been formally arrested in connection with the case and sent behind bars, he said. (GNS, KNO)
