SRINAGAR: The highly anticipated Z-Morh tunnel, a critical infrastructure project slated to open on January 13, is set to revolutionise connectivity and stimulate economic growth in Sonamarg.
Once operational, the tunnel will reduce travel time between Gagangeer and Sonamarg to just 20–25 minutes, ensuring safe, year-round access to the region, which often faces highway closures due to heavy snowfall and avalanches during winter.
The Z-Morh tunnel, under construction for several years, addresses a longstanding challenge for locals and travellers by providing uninterrupted access to this renowned tourist destination. Equipped with modern amenities and state-of-the-art safety features, the tunnel is expected to significantly enhance winter tourism and boost the local economy.
Hoteliers, traders, and locals have expressed their excitement over the tunnel’s inauguration, predicting a surge in domestic and international tourism. Irshad Ahmad Bhat, a local businessman, “The opening of the Z-Morh tunnel is a dream come true. It will not only improve our livelihoods but also open up new opportunities for winter tourism, which is the backbone of our economy.”
Local leaders emphasised the tunnel’s potential to strengthen infrastructure and its strategic importance. “The Z-Morh tunnel will integrate remote areas into the national economic framework, creating a more prosperous region,” they said.
A government official described the completion of the tunnel as a landmark achievement. “This marks a new chapter in regional development. It will facilitate the safe passage of goods, services, and people, while significantly enhancing economic growth and national security in the region,” he stated.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah hailed the Z-Morh tunnel as a “game changer.” In a post on X, he remarked, “J&K, especially central Kashmir, looks forward to the inauguration of this vital infrastructure. This asset will be a game changer for winter tourism in the valley.”
Mian Mehar Ali, MLA from Kangan, commended the project, stating, “The Z-Morh tunnel will ensure Sonamarg remains accessible even during harsh winters, benefiting locals and tourists alike.”
Ghulam Mohammad Bhat, CEO of the Sonamarg Development Authority (SDA), echoed these sentiments. “The Z-Morh tunnel is not just a time-saver; it’s a game-changer for Sonamarg. It will revolutionise tourism, benefiting hoteliers, winter-games enthusiasts, and everyone associated with the region’s tourism industry. This will keep Sonamarg open throughout the year,” he said.
