Zika virus: PMC reports two pregnant women with infection, count rises to 18 in Pune | Pune News

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Thursday said that two more pregnant women from Kharadi (Pune-Ahmednagar road) have been identified with Zika virus infection. This takes the count of pregnant women with the infection to 10. The total number of cases in the city is now at 18.

Dr Rajesh Dighe, Assistant chief medical officer, PMC, said that the two pregnant women who had tested positive were asymptomatic and the scans were negative for any anomaly in the foetus. A 32-year-old woman is in her 22nd week of pregnancy, while the other woman is 25 years’ old and in her 18th week of pregnancy.

Ever since the first case of Zika virus was detected in a pregnant woman, health officials have sent a total of 129 samples of pregnant women to ICMR-National Institute of Virology. PMC’s health department has collected a fine of Rs 1.8 lakh from societies and under construction sites where breeding spots have been identified.

Meanwhile at Saswad in Purandar taluka of Pune district, health authorities have detected the infection in a 65-year-old man. District health authorities said house-to-house surveillance is underway.

Dr Sachin Desai, district health officer said that the man was admitted to a private hospital where the sample was sent to NIV and the case was identified as a zika virus infection. “We have already alerted our health officers across talukas to check for patients suspected with fever and rash,” Dr Desai added.
