5 soldiers injured in gunfight in J&K’s Kupwara, op against militants underway | India News
Five soldiers were injured in a gunfight that erupted between militants and security forces in the frontier district of Kupwara on Saturday morning. While the injured soldiers have been evacuated to Srinagar, the operation against the militants is in progress.
The suspected infiltration and gunfight comes a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking in Kargil, warned Pakistan that their “nefarious designs will never succeed” and the “enemy will be given a forceful response”.
Official sources said that on Saturday morning, forces detected movement of suspected militants near Kumkari post on the Line of Control (LoC) in Machil sector of Kupwara. As the security forces challenged the militants, they opened fire, leading to a gunfight.
Sources said that in the initial burst of fire from the militants, three soldiers were injured. The men were immediately evacuated and shifted to hospital. Sources say the injured soldiers were later shifted to the Army’s 92 Base hospital in Srinagar. A senior police officer confirmed the injuries.
“This is preliminary information. It takes time to gather information from the area because of it being close to the Line of Control,” he said.
The Army, in a post on X, said that a militant has been killed while two of its soldiers have been injured in the gunfight. “There has been an exchange of fire with unidentified persons on a forward post in Kumkari on the Line of Control. One Pakistani person has been killed while two of our soldiers have suffered injuries and have been evacuated. Operations are in progress,” Army’s Chinar Corp posted on X.
