Chennai International Film Festival to commence on December 12; here’s the list of films to be screened

The 22nd Chennai International Film Festival (CIFF) is all set to happen later this month. The festival will commence on December 12, 2024, and the screenings will continue till December 19 with both the opening and closing ceremony scheduled to happen at PVR Sathyam Cinemas.

A total of 25 films have been selected by the Preview Committee for the Tamil Films Competition category and 12 films have been picked for the World Cinema category. The awards for the Tamil film competition and World Cinema Competition will be unveiled during the closing ceremony.

123 films chosen from 50 countries will be screened at the festival with The Room Next Door by Pedro Almodóvar and Anora by Sean Baker chosen as the opening and closing films respectively.

7. Anora by Sean Baker (Palme d’Or Winner)

8. Motel Destino by Karim Ainouz (Nomination)

9. The Girl with the Needle by Magnus Von Horn (Nomination)

10. The Village Next to Paradise by Mo Harawe (Nomination)

11. To a Land Unknown by Mahdi Fleifel (Nomination)

Venice Film Festival 2024 – Winners & Nominations

1. The Room Next Door by Pedro Almodóvar, (Golden Lion Award for Best Film)

2. One of Those Days When Hemme Dies By Murat Fıratoğlu, (Special Orizzonti Jury Prize)

Berlin International Film Festival 2024 – Winners & Nominations

1. Memories of a Burning Body by Antonella Sudasassi Furniss (Panorama Audience Award for Best Feature Film)

2. All Shall be Well by Ray Yeung (Teddy Award for Best Feature film)

3. Shahid by Narges Kalhor (International Confederation of Art Cinemas -CICAE Art Cinema Award)

4. Who Do I Belong To by Meryam Joobeur (Nomination)

5. Andrea Gets a Divorce by Josef Hader (Nomination)

6. Above the Dust by Wang Xiaoshuai (Nomination)

7. Scorched Earth by Thomas Arslan (Nomination)

8. In The Blind Spot by Ayse Polat (Nomination)

Embassies and Cultural Institutes of various countries have also contributed to the festival. The Australian Consulate-General presents two critically acclaimed Australian films, My Melbourne (14 December, 12:15 pm at Six Degrees PVR Sathyam Cinemas)and Force of Nature – The Dry 2 (13 December, 10 am at PVR INOX Citi Centre Mall). The other countries include Germany, Spain, Thailand, Iran, Russia, France, Chile, Hungary, Slovakia, Peru and Slovenia.

A total of 16 films were selected by the Preview Committee under the Indian Panorama category and 10 films by the Diploma students of the Tamil Nadu Government MGR Film & Television Institute will be screened at the festival.

A special premiere for over 5+ movies will take place as part of ‘Master Talks’ at the festival. As a part of this initiative by the Festival Director, AVM K Shanmugam, film directors and crew will be honoured and will also share a brief interaction with the audience.

A set of over 10 sessions is planned with eminent personalities from the film industry to conduct a series of masterclasses and conversations for the student community. The Department of Visual Communication, Avichi College of Arts & Science will curate and organize the masterclasses and conversations.
