Centre for Environmental Law serves legal notice to JMC Commissioner over solid waste management issues

Jammu, Dec 16: The Centre for Environmental Law has served a legal notice to the Commissioner of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) over the non-implementation of critical directives issued by the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir, and Ladakh concerning solid waste management (SWM) in Jammu city.

Despite multiple court orders emphasizing the need for scientific waste disposal, segregation at source, and adherence to the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, the city of Jammu continues to face severe environmental and public health hazards due to unregulated dumping and mismanagement of solid waste.

The legal notice demands immediate action from the JMC, including the submission of a detailed compliance report to the court, implementation of SWM rules, and disclosure of funds allocated and utilized for waste management. Non-compliance will compel further legal action, including filing a contempt petition to uphold the constitutional right to a clean environment under Article 21.
