Uri, Dec 20: Ghulam Rasool Khawaja, 80, the maternal uncle of MLA Uri Dr Sajjad Shafi passed away early this morning.
He was laid to rest in his hometown Garkote village.
The deceased was the brother-in-law of former Member of Parliament (MP) and senior National Conference (NC) leader Mohammad Shafi Uri.
According to his family, Khawaja had been suffering from chest-related issues and had recently undergone treatment.
He was also a well-known social activist of Uri and served as former sarpanch of Garkote village.
People from various walks of life visited Khawaja’s residence to offer their condolences.
“This is a personal loss. He was one of my mentors,” Dr Sajjad Shafi said.
