Post-Tengpora road accident, increase in driving license applicants: RTO Kashmir

Srinagar, Dec 21: Regional Transport Officer (RTO) Kashmir, Qazi Irfan, has said that there has been a significant increase in the number of applicants seeking valid driving licenses following the tragic road accident at Tengpora Bypass in Srinagar.

To address this surge, directions have been issued to all ARTOs to increase the number of slots for license processing by 10%.

Speaking to Greater Kashmir, RTO Kashmir Qazi Irfan, who recently assumed office, stated, “The department has intensified its enforcement efforts after the Tengpora road accident to educate underage youth about the repercussions of driving without valid documents. We have also enhanced awareness drives, and the number of applicants for driving licenses has noticeably increased. To accommodate this demand, we have directed all ARTOs to increase slots by 10%, enabling more eligible applicants to obtain valid licenses for driving two-wheelers and four-wheelers.”

He also urged citizens to exercise caution while driving, especially during the prevailing winter weather. “People should avoid unnecessary travel and check advisories before venturing out. Slippery road conditions have significantly increased the risk of skidding. Overtaking and the use of mobile phones while driving must be avoided,” he emphasized.

The RTO further advised drivers to keep emergency kits on hand and provided the Traffic Department’s helpline number, 103, for use in case of emergencies. “Safety on roads is paramount, and we encourage everyone to adhere to traffic rules and take necessary precautions,” he added.
