3 men die after Google Maps leads them to unfinished bridge in UP

Srinagar, Nov 25: Three people were killed after Google Maps led them to an under-construction bridge and their car plunged from the unfinished flyover into a river in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly district, police said Saturday.

The men were on their way from Gurugram to Bareilly where they were to attend a wedding, India Today reported.

Relying on Google Maps to reach their destination, their GPS led them to the unfinished flyover.

The car travelled on the bridge and fell into the Ramganga, a shallow river, from a height of 50 feet.

On Sunday morning, their damaged car was spotted by locals with three men dead inside. Consequently, the locals informed the police who arrived at the spot and took the bodies for a post-mortem examination.

“At 9:30 am today, a damaged car was found on the river Ramganga. Police were informed and arrived at the spot. When the police arrived, they saw a Wagon R, which was possibly hired as a taxi, on the river. The car went to the incomplete bridge and fell into a river from there,” police said.

“The bodies were found and taken for post-mortem. The identities of two people, Amit and Vivek, were confirmed. More details on the identity of the third one are being worked on,” police added.

The family members of the victims blamed the concerned officials for the incident and questioned why the bridge was unfinished, and no barricades were installed at one end of the structure.

They said that an FIR should be lodged against the construction department for alleged negligence.
