Action against drug trafficking: 4 drug peddlers held with contraband in Kashmir, say police

Srinagar, Nov 26: In a significant breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have arrested four drug peddlers in Srinagar and Anantnag districts and recovered contraband substances from their possession.

A police spokesperson in a statement said that during naka checking at 90-Feet Road near Matoo Steel, two vehicles (Scooty) bearing registration No JK01AN-6945 and (Zen) bearing registration No. JK01H-5675 were intercepted which were coming simultaneously from Awantabawan and moving towards Elahibagh. During search of vehicle (Zen Car), 10 grams of Brown Sugar was recovered from the driver of said car. He has been identified as Shabir Ahmed Mir, son of Gh. Qadir, resident of Bilal Colony Soura. Similarly, during the search of Scooty rider 6 grams of Brown Sugar like substance was recovered from his possession. The accused rider has been identified as Shah Murtaza Iqbal, son of Mohd Iqbal Shah, resident of Bilal Colony Soura. They have been arrested and shifted to police station where they remain in custody. Vehicles used in the commission of crime have also been seized.

During questioning, it came to fore that both the accused individuals are chronic drug peddlers and are actively involved in selling of illegal drugs among the youth of district Srinagar especially among the youth of Soura area.

A case vide FIR No. 90/2024 under relevant sections of law has been registered at Police Station Soura and further investigation is going on, the statement said.

Similarly, a police team from Police Station Srigufwara at a checkpoint established near the hospital crossing in Sirhama intercepted a suspicious person. A thorough search led to the recovery of approximately 3 kilograms of illicit cannabis powder from his possession. The accused has been identified as Gulzar Ahmad Rather, son of Mohd Ayoub Rather, a resident of Sirhama.

In another separate operation, a police team from Police Station Bijbehara established a naka at Doodnard Waghama. During the checkpoint inspection, the team intercepted a vehicle bearing registration number JK03G-8966. Upon searching the vehicle, 3.350 kilograms of a charas was recovered from his possession. The accused driver has been identified as Gulzar Ahmad Rather, son of Gh. Rasool Rather resident of Waghama, Bijbehara, the statement said.

Both the accused have been arrested and shifted to respective police stations where they remain in custody. Accordingly, cases under relevant sections of the law have been registered at Police Station Srigufwara and Police Station Bijbehara and further investigation has been initiated.
