The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has announced Naser Siddiqui as its candidate for the Aurangabad Central constituency in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar district for the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections.
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi made the announcement on X on Friday. “Nasser Siddiqui will be the AIMIM candidate from Aurangabad Central Assembly Constituency. My best wishes to him.” Owaisi posted on X.
Siddiqui will face off against Pradeep Jaiswal from the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, Kishanchand Tanwani from the Shiv Sena (UBT) faction, and Javed Quraishi from the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi, setting the stage for a competitive four-cornered race.
Siddiqui, a key figure within AIMIM’s local cadre, is well-regarded for his community outreach and garnered substantial support in the 2019 Assembly elections, where he finished in second place with 35.4% of the vote share.
His nomination is seen as part of AIMIM’s strategic approach to strengthen its political foothold in Maharashtra and to consolidate its support among marginalized communities by focusing on social issues, infrastructure, healthcare, and development.
AIMIM’s influence in Maharashtra politics began to rise significantly with the 2014 Assembly elections, in which the party secured two seats and Imtiaz Jaleel’s victory in Aurangabad Central. Jaleel’s win marked AIMIM’s emergence as a prominent voice for the region’s communities. His subsequent win in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections made him the first Muslim representative from Aurangabad Central in nearly four decades, solidifying AIMIM’s position in the region.
However, challenges have recently emerged for the party. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Jaleel faced a significant loss, signaling a potential shift in voter sentiment.
