Allow J-K’s elected govt to function independently: NC’s Hasnain Masoodi asks centre

Srinagar, Dec 05: National Conference (NC) senior leader and MLA Pampore, Hasnain Masoodi today called upon the Government of India to respect the public mandate in Jammu and Kashmir and uphold democratic values.

Talking to reporters according to news agency KINS, Masoodi called the need for the central government to recognize the aspirations of the people and allow the democratically-elected government in the region to function independently.

Masoodi referred to December 5 as a significant day, underscoring its connection to identity and self-respect. He stated, “This day holds importance for us, and the way to respect it is by honoring the sentiments of the people.”

He further criticized the government’s failure to adhere to its business rules, questioning the prolonged delays in decision-making.

Highlighting the importance of historical days like July 13 and September 8, Masoodi expressed hope that the government would respect public sentiment associated with such dates in the future. “The government must take meaningful steps to honor these days. Respecting public sentiment should translate into concrete actions,” he said.

Masoodi also raised concerns about recent surveys and policies, alleging that they violate the 1991 Religious Places Act and create divisions among communities. He described these measures as attempts to “cultivate hatred” and urged the public to reject divisive tactics. “This new method is designed to divide the people, and we must not allow it. It is not acceptable in any form,” he asserted.

The NC leader appealed to the central government to focus on unity and respect for democratic institutions, emphasizing that an independent, functional government in Jammu and Kashmir is in the best interest of both the people and the country.
