Army thwarts major terror attack in Rajouri’s Gundha village, search ops launched

Early Monday, Army troops foiled a terrorist attack on a security post in the Gundha area of Rajouri district, Jammu and Kashmir, officials said. The incident occurred at 4 a.m. when terrorists opened fire on the post.Troops guarding the post retaliated immediately, resulting in fierce exchanges of gunfire. An Army spokesperson confirmed the retaliation and subsequent actions. “The troops foiled the attack, following which a cordon and search operation was launched by security forces in the area,” the spokesperson stated.

“Terrorist fire was returned. The soldier injured in the firing by the terrorists was shifted to hospital,” said an official source.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that a jawan and a civilian sustained injuries during the attack. However, no official confirmation has been provided regarding the extent of the injuries.

Following the attack, security forces launched a cordon and search operation in the area to track down the terrorists. Fresh firing has broken out between the terrorists and security forces, indicating the ongoing nature of the operation.

Sources revealed that the terrorists initially attempted to attack the house of a village defence group (VDG) member and ex-serviceman on the outskirts of a hamlet. The presence of police personnel thwarted this attempt, forcing the terrorists to flee and later target the Army post.

Enhanced Security Measures
In response to the attack, security measures in the region have been heightened. More reinforcements have been dispatched to carry out the search operation and ensure no further escalation. “A search operation has been started in the area. More reinforcements have been rushed in to carry out the search operation,” sources added.Recent Spike in Terror Activities
This thwarted attack is part of a worrying trend of increased terror incidents in the Jammu region. Recent months have seen a spike in attacks, including a terror attack on an army convoy in Kathua and encounters in Doda and Udhampur. On Thursday, Indian Army troops opened fire after noticing suspicious movement near the Line of Control in the Sunderbani area of Rajouri district.

Injuries and Casualties

In a separate incident, two Indian Army soldiers were injured during an encounter with terrorists in the Kastigarh area of Doda district. Initial treatment was administered at the government hospital in Doda before the soldiers were airlifted to the Army hospital. This encounter came just days after four army soldiers, including an officer, lost their lives in a Doda encounter.

Honoring the Fallen
On July 16, Lt Gen MV Suchindra Kumar, Northern Army Commander, paid homage to the four soldiers killed in the line of duty during the Doda encounter. The soldiers were identified as Captain Brijesh Thapa, Naik D Rajesh, Sepoy Bijendra, and Sepoy Ajay Kumar Singh. “The bravehearts laid down their lives to ensure peace in the region,” Kumar stated.

Increased Military Presence
To counter the rising terrorist activities, around 4,000 additional soldiers have been deployed in the hilly districts of the Jammu division. Elite Para Commandos and troops trained in mountain warfare have been positioned to effectively counter the terrorist threat.

Revised Security Strategy
Security forces have adopted a revised strategy to counter the hit-and-run tactics used by terrorists. Since June 9, six terrorist attacks have been reported in the Jammu division, resulting in the deaths of 12 security personnel. These attacks occurred in Poonch, Rajouri, Doda, and Kathua districts, often involving ambushes in densely forested areas.

The region has witnessed a surge in terrorist activities, with multiple incidents reported in recent months. The increased military presence and proactive measures aim to ensure the safety and security of the local population. The security forces are employing new tactics and strategies to deal with the evolving threat posed by terrorists.
