Bengaluru Ambulance Driver Arrested for Siren Misuse to Pick Up Doctor, ET HealthWorld
Bengaluru: Ambulance drivers misusing sirens and lights is quite common, but very rarely do they come to light as police usually don’t take the risk of stopping the vehicle, as the sirens and lights are meant to be used while transporting critical patients during golden hour. One such rare incident was caught recently by Sadashivanagar traffic police Monday morning when an ambulance was misusing the siren and lights to fetch a doctor.
Assistant sub-inspector Mayamma L, while on duty at Sadashivanagar traffic police junction, noticed an ambulance passing through the junction between 10am and 10.30am a few times with the siren and lights on. She suspected something amiss and decided to check when the same ambulance coming from CV Raman Road crossed the junction on Monday.
As she suspected, there was no patient in the vehicle. Instead, a doctor was lying on the seat, checking his mobile phone.
The ambulance (Maruti Suzuki Eeco), belonged to Tenet Diagnostics in Sadashivanagar. The driver was identified as Zunaid Ahmed, 24. He confessed he had used the ambulance to pick the doctor from home to the diagnostics centre and to drop him back.
A case was registered against the driver under BNS Section 285 (danger or obstruction in a public way or line of navigation), and the vehicle was seized. A senior officer said misuse of siren and lights by an ambulance can be dangerous and disruptive for other motorists. Both the driver and doctor were warned not to misuse the privileges.
