Brain-Dead Man’s Organ Donation Saves Lives of Six Patients, Health News, ET HealthWorld
Trichy: A 36-year-old brain-dead man’s organs were donated to six people after they were harvested at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital on Monday.
The man who was admitted to the hospital with severe head injuries on Nov 21, failed to recover and was declared brain-dead on Nov 24. After obtaining his family’s consent, doctors harvested his heart, liver, skin, kidneys and cornea. According to the norms of Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu (Transtan), a team of doctors led by surgeon Dr Ravi transplanted one of the kidneys in a 30-year-old patient from Trichy undergoing dialysis at MGMGH for the past three years.
The other kidney was sent to a patient at Thanjavur medical college hospital while the liver was transplanted to a patient at a private hospital in Trichy. The heart was donated to a patient at a hospital in Chennai, a cornea to a patient at MGMGH, and the skin to a private hospital in Madurai.
This was the 20th organ harvest from a brain-dead person conducted at MGMGH. The man’s mortal remains were accorded state honours at the hospital.
