Doctors Give New Lease Of Life To 46-Year Male Attacked By Cow
Dr Mriganka Sekhar Sharma, Manipal Hospitals Gurugram, said, “This was a complex case, as the internal injuries of the patient were not completely diagnosed during the screening.”
46-year-old Mr Kailash Nath from Gurugram was walking on the road when a cow attacked him without any provocation, causing severe soft tissue, chest and abdominal injuries. He was immediately rushed to Manipal Hospital, Gurugram, where he was admitted to the emergency room and stabilized. On evaluation, he was found to have multiple rib fractures on the right side along with pneumothorax (leakage of air from the lungs) along with abdominal injuries. Dr Mriganka Shekhar Sharma, Head of the Department of General Minimal Access & Bariatric Surgery, and his team decided to perform a Tube thoracostomy on the right side for the chest trauma in the emergency ward.
A Tear In The Liver
Most of these injuries are usually managed without any surgery. The patient was transfused with several units of blood and given a trial of conservative management. However, his condition started to deteriorate despite a stable haemoglobin. This prompted Dr Mriganka and his team to have a clinical suspicion of more grievous injuries. Acting on this hunch, the patient was taken up for an emergency laparotomy. At surgery, the patient was found to have a near complete transection of his small intestine (Jeujunum). A life-saving repair surgery was performed to deal with the intestinal injury.
Speaking On The Case
Dr Mriganka Sekhar Sharma, Head of the Department – of General Minimal Access & Bariatric Surgery, Manipal Hospitals Gurugram, said, “This was a complex case, as the internal injuries of the patient were not completely diagnosed during the screening. However, our clinical expertise and multidisciplinary approach ensured the recovery of the patient, and that no aspect of his condition went unaddressed. Early detection and timely intervention helped in minimizing the impact of the additional complications. Mr. Nath remained in the ICU for ten days, requiring ventilatory support for his lungs. Despite the hurdles and setbacks, he recovered and was successfully discharged after 2 weeks.”
