ECI to Announce Bye-Poll Dates for Budgam, Nagrota Soon
SRINAGAR: The Election Commission of India (ECI) is preparing to announce the schedule for the bye-elections in the Budgam and Nagrota assembly segments of Jammu and Kashmir, sources have revealed.
As per sources, the poll body will likely unveil the election schedule for these two seats in the coming days.
“The announcement is expected this week,” they said, adding that voting is anticipated to take place in the second or third week of February.
The Budgam seat fell vacant after Omar Abdullah chose to retain the party stronghold of Ganderbal, while the Nagrota seat became vacant following the demise of BJP leader Devinder Singh Rana.
The BJP is reportedly planning to field Devinder Singh Rana’s daughter, Devyani Rana, as its candidate for the Nagrota seat. Meanwhile, all eyes are on the National Conference (NC) to see who will be its candidate for the Budgam seat.
The NC has yet to hint at its candidate for Budgam, sparking widespread curiosity among political observers and voters alike.
In the 2024 J&K elections, Omar Abdullah won the Budgam seat, defeating Muntazir Mehdi, son of separatist leader Agha Hassan, by a margin of over 18,000 votes. Rana secured the Nagrota seat by defeating Joginder Singh of the National Conference by 30,472 votes. (KNO)
