Young politician Fahad Ahmad, known for his role in movements such as the anti-CAA protests, officially joined Sharad Pawar’s NCP-Congress alliance on Sunday, positioning himself to run against Sana Malik, the daughter of senior NCP (Ajit Pawar) leader Nawab Malik, from the Anushakti Nagar constituency in the upcoming Maharashtra Elections 2024.
Ahmad was the state president of the Samajwadi Yuvjan Sabha, the youth wing of the Samajwadi Party in Maharashtra.
SP leader Abu Azmi shared last week that he talked with Sharad Pawar regarding Ahmad’s candidacy and said that Ahmad could be fielded from Mumbai’s Anushakti Nagar as the NCP (SP) candidate in case the Pawar-led party did not have a suitable candidate for the seat, according to a report by the Press Trust of India (PTI).
When announcing Ahmad’s candidacy, NCP-SP leader Jayant Patil remarked, “Fahad Ahmad is a well-educated young Muslim youth and has worked as an activist across the country. People want us to give a chance to such leaders. He was in the Samajwadi Party earlier but we had talks with SP and he came to our party. We gave him a ticket from our party from the Anushakti Nagar constituency…”
Ahmad emphasised the shared values between the Samajwadi Party and NCP-SP and said, “The NCP (SP) and SP are like families. There was a very strong relationship between Mulayam Singh Yadav and now Sharad Pawar and Supriya Sule and Akhilesh Yadav and Dimple Yadav.”
Ahmad joined the Samajwadi Party in 2022 after being active in student unions. A graduate of Aligarh Muslim University, he did his M.Phil. in social work from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in Mumbai. During his time at TISS, he served as the General Secretary of the TISS Student’s Union in 2017 and 2018. Ahmad married Bollywood actor and vocal critic of Narendra Modi government, Swara Bhaskar, on 16 February 2023.
Bhasker congratulated Ahmad on X and said, “New kid on the block !! Huge thanks to @PawarSpeaks Saab, @supriya_sule ma’am, @yadavakhilesh ji, @abuasimazmi Saab for their graciousness, magnanimity, for giving @FahadZirarAhmad the opportunity. (sic).”
She added: “He’s a good egg 🙂 He won’t let you down! 💙🙏🏽✨ Let’s gooooo! #AnushaktiNagar.”
The Maharashtra assembly elections are scheduled for 20 November with results to be announced on 23 November.
