First Artificial Urethral Sphincter Implantation in Uttar Pradesh, ET HealthWorld
Lucknow: Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS) claimed on Wednesday to have successfully performed the first-ever implantation of an artificial urethral sphincter in a govt hospital in Uttar Pradesh.
The surgery was performed on 69-year-old Shyam Narayan from Rasra in Ballia district, who suffered from total urinary incontinence after undergoing prostate cancer surgery in 2019. A team of specialists from the department of urology and renal transplant at RMLIMS, led by Dr Ishwar Ram Dhayal, carried out the procedure with support from Dr Gautam Banga, a well-known urologist from Delhi.
Dr Ishwar explained that the artificial urethral sphincter is a modern medical device designed to help patients regain control over their urinary functions, especially those who have not responded to other treatments. This procedure is particularly useful for patients who have had prostate surgery and are dealing with severe incontinence.
Shyam Narayan struggled with incontinence for several years, which severely affected his life. “The successful implantation of the AMS 800 device has now given him hope for a better quality of life,” said Dr Ishwar.
Dr Ishwar expressed pride in offering this advanced procedure, saying, “The implantation of the artificial urethral sphincter is a complex procedure that requires great precision and expertise, as placing a small, sophisticated device around the urethra to mimic the function of a natural sphincter, allowing patients to regain control over urinary functions, is itself complex.”
He added, “We must carefully navigate through the surrounding tissues to avoid damage while ensuring that the sphincter functions correctly. This procedure is often recommended for patients with severe urinary incontinence, especially those who have not responded to other treatments, such as after prostate surgery, making it a critical and advanced solution for improving quality of life.”
Dr Gautam Banga, who traveled from Delhi for the surgery, added, “It’s an honour to be part of this historic surgery in Uttar Pradesh. We hope this opens the door for more advanced medical procedures in the region, ensuring patients receive world-class care.”
Other team members involved in the surgery included Dr Alok Srivastava, Dr Shivani, Dr Nandan, Dr Praveen, and the anaesthesia team of Dr P K Das and Dr Smarika.
Prof C M Singh, director of RMLIMS, highlighted the importance of this achievement, saying, “This success shows our commitment to offering the latest medical treatments and specialised care to improve patient outcomes.”
