Amidst the United States Presidential election, the Democratic Party’s Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar — the first Muslim women to serve in the United States Congress – have won the US House of Representatives re-election.
Omar and Tlaib have been targets of pro-Israel lobbies in the US for their criticism of the genocidal war on Gaza. Tlaib, the first woman of Palestinian descent in the US Congress, was re-elected for a fourth term as a representative for Michigan — a key state the Democrats Kamala Harris is struggling to win over.
Earlier this week, Tlaib declined to endorse Kamala Harris at a union rally in Detroit, where the war in Gaza is the top issue for the largest block of Arab American voters in the country.
Omar, a former refugee and Somali American retook her seat for a third term in Minnesota.
Earlier this week, Tlaib, joined by progressive colleagues Cori Bush, André Carson, Ilhan Omar, and Summer Lee letter demanded a detailed account of US involvement with Israeli forces.
in a letter, they cite the War Powers Resolution of 1973, which established that only Congress can authorize military action abroad, and assert that the Biden administration’s involvement in the expanding regional conflict lacks proper authorization.
Meanwhile, Republicans won the Senate majority after flipping Democratic seats in West Virginia and Ohio. Neither party appeared to have an edge in the fight for control of the House of Representatives where Republicans currently hold a narrow majority.
Fox News projected that Republican Donald Trump has won the US presidency, defeating Harris and capping a stunning political comeback four years after he left the White House.
“Trump is a proud Islamophobe + serial liar who doesn’t stand for peace. The reality is that the Biden admin’s unconditional support for genocide is what got us here. This should be a wake-up call for those who continue to support genocide. This election didn’t have to be close,” Tlaib posted on X on November 01.
