Govt introduces initiatives for rare disease patients, ET HealthWorld

Chandigarh: The ministry of health and family welfare has introduced initiatives through the National Policy for Rare Diseases to address the challenges faced by patients with rare diseases. The policy aims to create a more inclusive and supportive healthcare system for individuals affected by rare diseases and their families.

To support these objectives, the central government is providing financial assistance for the treatment of certain listed diseases, promoting innovation, and ensuring the availability of affordable medications.

The ministry has also launched a digital portal for crowdfunding, specifically for the treatment of rare diseases. This portal, available at https://rarediseases.mohfw.gov.in, facilitates voluntary contributions from both individuals and corporate donors to help cover patients’ medical expenses. PGI serves as a centre of excellence under this policy.
