India recorded its warmest October with respect to minimum temperatures in 123 years, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday.
“The delayed exit of the southwest monsoon kept the monsoonal flow incoming; there were four low pressure systems and absence of western disturbances that could keep a check on the temperatures – all have contributed in the higher-than-normal minimum temperatures during October,” said Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General, IMD.
In 2024 October, the all-India average minimum temperature was 21.85 degrees Celsius against a normal of 20.01 degrees Celsius. Similarly, the minimum temperatures over northwest India (monthly average – 19.07 degrees Celsius), central India (monthly average – 23.10 degrees Celsius) and south peninsular India (monthly average – 23.45 degrees Celsius) set new records for October since 1901.
India recorded normal rainfall in October with east and northeast India (14.3 per cent) and southern India (11.8 per cent) above normal, this was largely because of active northeast monsoon, which made a timely onset.
Warm temperature trends shall continue in November, too, across the country with both day and night temperatures remaining above normal.
