iPhone 17 Slim: The iPhone that Apple always wanted to make | Technology News

According to several reports, the upcoming iPhone 16 lineup, expected to launch in September, may not be significantly different from the iPhone 15 series. However, Apple is said to be working on something significant for 2025. The company is reportedly working on its first “slim” iPhone, expected to be the flagship of the iPhone 17 series, set to launch late next year.

With the iPhone 17 series, the company is expected to introduce a new model — the iPhone 17 Slim, which is expected to be developed to showcase the prowess of its research and development capabilities. While most iPhones are known for being slim, the iPhone 17 Slim is said to be its most premium device while being the slimmest iPhone to date, period.

Apple’s iPhones from the last few generations have been very similar to each other, and the upcoming iPhone 17 Slim is stated to be the pinnacle of candy bar-style smartphones and a result of cutting-edge engineering and innovation. With these things in mind, here is everything we know so far about the iPhone 17 Slim.

Slimmest iPhone ever, period

As brands cram more features into a device, it starts to get thicker. Only with cutting-edge technology and innovation can the thickness be reduced drastically, and the iPhone 17 Slim is speculated to be one such smartphone. The Information first reported about the iPhone 17 Slim back in May, claiming it would use aluminium rather than titanium, unlike the iPhone 15 Pro.

The iPhone 17 Slim is said to be as important as the iPhone X for the company, which was the first iPhone to embrace a modern bezel-less design, featuring a Face ID system without any home button.

Festive offer

The report emphasised that the iPhone 17 Slim will be the slimmest iPhone with a modern form factor; however, it might not be the lightest. Besides, it is also speculated that a narrower Dynamic Island cutout on the display will be introduced, featuring a new and improved Face ID system.

However, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests otherwise, stating that the iPhone 17 Slim (code-named D23) will indeed come with a titanium frame to offer both weight and structural benefits. This could be the case, considering how the iPhone 6 became infamous for its “bendgate” issue. The iPhone 6 was the slimmest iPhone of its time and featured an aluminium frame.

Besides being slim, the iPhone 17 Slim is also expected to pack a new display that’s very different from any other iPhone in size and specifications. The iPhone 17 Slim boasts a 6.6-inch screen, which makes it smaller than the iPhone 15 Pro Max, suggest analysts Jeff Pu and Ming-Chi Kuo.

However, according to Ross Young, the Apple iPhone 17 Slim might go for a slightly smaller 6.55-inch screen, again, something that we haven’t seen on any iPhone to date. It is also said to be the first non-Pro iPhone to offer a 120Hz ProMotion display, which also enables experiences like an always-on display.

The iPhone 17 Slim is also said to be the first device from Apple to feature Galaxy S24 Ultra-like anti-reflective coating. Apple has been a long-time partner of Corning, however, unlike Android smartphone makers, Apple has an exclusive deal, where Corning makes proprietary solutions, without disclosing the exact variant of the Gorilla Glass. The new anti-reflective coating will help reduce reflections significantly, as noted on the Galaxy S24 Ultra, and it is also said to be even more scratch-resistant, eliminating the requirement for additional tempered glass.

A new chip capable of Gen-AI along with more RAM and storage

The iPhone 17 Slim, just like the iPhone 17 Pro series, will be powered by a new chip — A19, possibly with at least 8 GB RAM, and just like the iPhone 15 Pro Max, the base variant of the iPhone 17 Slim is expected to offer at least 256 GB of internal storage. The A19 chip is expected to be fabricated using TSMC’s cutting-edge 3nm processor and will have a capable neural processing unit (NPU) to power on-device generative AI experiences and to enable Apple Intelligence, and this is also speculated to be the first iPhone to feature an in-house 5G modem.

A unique camera island unlike any other iPhone

Most modern iPhones are pretty slim, but they do pack a substantial camera island, which does add to the thickness. To solve this, the iPhone 17 Slim is said to pack a different-looking camera island, suggests The Information.

While some reports claim the iPhone 17 Slim will have as many as three or at least two cameras, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims it will only have one camera. The iPhone 17 Slim is also said to be the first device in Apple’s lineup to include a 24 MP selfie camera, featuring an upgraded 6P lens system along with improved auto-focus capability.

New battery chemistry speculated

One of the major factors making a smartphone thick is the battery size, and the upcoming iPhone 17 Slim is likely to use new battery chemistry, which could help the company significantly reduce the size of the battery without compromising on the capacity.

When will it launch and how much will it cost?

The iPhone 17 Slim is said to be on the expensive side and could cost as much as $1,199 or more than that. This also means that this could be the iPhone Ultra that made some buzz in the recent past. In India, it could easily end up being the most expensive iPhone, costing upwards of Rs 1,30,000. In terms of features and capabilities, the iPhone 17 Slim is likely to be as capable as the iPhone 17 Pro but in an ultra-slim avatar.
