Israel’s government on Thursday declared that they had killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in Gaza in a gunfight during a military operation in Rafah. Hamas has not yet commented on it.

Israel said he was killed on Wednesday in a chance encounter in Rafah in southern Gaza. The slain Hamas leader’s body was identified using DNA testing, Israel said.

Occupational forces admitted that there were no signs of the presence of hostages in the area and Sinwar, along with two other fighters were killed in a confrontation.

In a video address, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the killing of the Hamas leader was not the end of Israel’s war on Gaza, and that its military would continue fighting until its captives were returned.

The Israeli military released a drone video of the “final moments” of Sinwar, in which the injured man draped in a keffiyeh, sitting on a sofa amidst the rubbles. Upon seeing the drone he throws a stick at it in defiance.

Sinwar previously said the best thing Israel could do for his reputation was to kill him in combat.

The 62-year-old became leader of Hamas in August, days after his predecessor Ismail Haniyeh was killed in an Israeli attack carried out in Tehran. Sinwar is the fourth Hamas leader killed by Israel in the past twenty years.

Observers point out the image of Sinwar, killed during fighting on the frontline, debunking propaganda of Western media that the Hamas leader was hiding in the tunnel and surrounded by hostages for his safety.

Sinwar was born as a refugee in Khan Younis camp in Gaza in 1962. He studied at the Islamic University of Gaza – where he got involved in activism. It was at university, in 1982, that he was arrested for the first time by Israeli authorities. He was re-arrested again for his involvement in anti-occupation activities.

In 1988, he was arrested by Israeli forces and this time given four life sentences – the equivalent of 426 years in jail.

He spent the next 23 years in jail, where he learned Hebrew and immersed himself in Israeli politics and culture. He also wrote a novel, titled The Thorn and the Carnation, which drew on his own life experiences of growing up in Gaza.

He was released in a prison swap in 2011 and became Hamas leader in Gaza in 2017. He spearheaded Hamas’ reconciliation talks with Fatah and the Palestinian Authority (PA).

In 2018, he played a leading role in organising the “Great March of Return” peaceful protests, which demanded an end to the siege on Gaza and the right of return for refugees. It was brutally cracked down on by Israeli forces, who killed 230 protesters.
