Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a surprise announcement late Tuesday, dismissed his defence minister Yoav Gallant from his position citing ‘significant gaps’ and a ‘crisis of trust’ between them.
Following Gallant’s dismissal, Netanyahu appointed Israel Katz as new defence minister.
“In the midst of a war, more than ever, full trust is required between the prime minister and defense minister,” Netanyahu said. “Unfortunately, although in the first months of the campaign there was such trust and there was very fruitful work, during the last months this trust cracked between me and the defense minister.”
Whilst Israel’s leadership initially displayed unity following Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attack, divergent policy approaches emerged as the conflict expanded to Lebanon. Netanyahu advocated for sustained military pressure on Hamas, whilst Gallant favoured a diplomatic solution to secure the release of hostages.
Gallant, respected for his straightforward demeanour and military background, responded with a statement: “The security of the state of Israel always was, and will always remain, my life’s mission.”

Throughout the war, Gallant has worn a black buttoned shirt as a symbol of mourning for the October 7 attack. He established strong professional relations with US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.
Netanyahu’s previous attempt to dismiss Gallant in March 2023 resulted in widespread public protests. Another consideration to remove him occurred during summer, before Tuesday’s final decision.
Foreign ,inister Israel Katz, a Netanyahu supporter with limited military experience, will succeed Gallant. The foreign affairs position will be filled by Gideon Saar, a former Netanyahu opponent who recently joined the government.
Netanyahu, known for managing potential rivals, claimed he made numerous attempts to resolve differences with Gallant. He expressed concern that these disagreements became public knowledge and benefited Israel’s adversaries.
