Joe Biden: ‘I know Trump’s type’: Harris calls Trump a ‘predator and cheater,’ pledges November victory
US Vice President Kamala Harris launched a personal attack on Donald Trump and vowed to win in November despite the “rollercoaster” of President Joe Biden’s shock exit. Harris, now the frontrunner for the Democratic party‘s nomination, addressed campaign workers in Wilmington, Delaware, with a speech following Biden’s announcement on Sunday.
“We are going to win in November,” Harris declared confidently to campaign workers. She emphasised her readiness to take on Trump, referencing her past role as California’s chief prosecutor. “Predators who abused women. Fraudsters who ripped off consumers. Cheaters who broke the rules for their own gain. So hear me when I say I know Donald Trump’s type,” she said to a round of applause.
“Donald Trump wants to take our country backwards to a time before many of our fellow Americans had full freedoms and rights, but we believe in a brighter future that makes room for all Americans,” said Harris.
Harris also pledged to focus on the politically explosive issue of abortion, criticising Trump for praising the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision to overturn the federal right to the procedure.
Biden, 81, who has been recovering from a bout of Covid-19, made his first public remarks in nearly a week, calling into the campaign meeting. He explained his decision to step aside, citing health and mental acuity concerns, and endorsed Harris as “the best.” “Dropping out had been the right thing to do,” he said, praising Harris and adding, “I’m watching you kid. I love you.”
Harris is aiming to become the first female president in US history. She has won support from numerous Democratic leaders and witnessed a surge in voter donations. A record $81 million was raised in just 24 hours after Biden stepped aside, a campaign claim said, marking the largest one-day haul in presidential history.
Among the 888,000 donors, some 60 percent were making their first 2024 contribution. Notably, former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, an influential figure in the party, endorsed Harris “with immense pride and limitless optimism.”
In a symbolic gesture, Harris hosted a ceremony for college athletes at the White House on Monday while Biden remained in isolation at his Delaware beach house. “Joe Biden’s legacy of accomplishment over the past three years is unmatched in modern history,” Harris said in her brief remarks on the White House South Lawn.
Biden’s stunning withdrawal has jolted the Democratic party, potentially unifying it under Harris’s leadership, and could lead to America electing its first female president.
