‘Kagurabachi’ set for highly anticipated anime adaptation
Shonen Jump’s latest smash-hit Kagurabachi is set to make the leap to anime, as revealed in a major report from Toyokeizai. The series, created by Takeru Hokazon, has quickly earned a reputation as the “next-generation” sensation, following in the footsteps of Jujutsu Kaisen and My Hero Academia.
The anime adaptation, produced by Shochiku and CyberAgent, will be animated by Cygames Pictures, the studio behind critically acclaimed titles like Uma Musume and Brave Bang Bravern!. Although no release date or streaming details have been confirmed, the decision to partner with Cygames rather than larger, more established studios like MAPPA or Bones has raised eyebrows.
An unnamed anime producer told Toyokeizai that the move likely stems from a desire to avoid overburdening major studios with multiple high-profile projects, which could lead to production issues, as seen with Jujutsu Kaisen and Blue Lock Season 2. The producer explained, “If there was an additional intention [behind choosing an outsider], it would be to decentralize the studios.”
With Kagurabachi already surpassing one million copies in circulation in just four volumes, its anime adaptation is one of the most highly anticipated releases of the decade. The story follows Chihiro, a young swordsmith who embarks on a path of revenge after his father is murdered, setting the stage for a confrontation with a mysterious group of sorcerers. This series is poised to make waves, especially with VIZ’s swift licensing of the series for North America.
