Kerala Government to Launch Comprehensive Action Plan Against Diabetes, ET HealthWorld
T’puram: The state health department is set to develop an action plan to significantly reduce diabetes cases, announced health minister Veena George on Wednesday. The plan will feature both short-term and long-term strategies to combat the disease.
A global conclave will be organized to chart a roadmap for diabetes treatment, with a pre-conclave at the state level to gather inputs for the event, the minister said. The conclave will aim to introduce innovative treatment methods and systems in diabetes care to doctors and health department personnel, with public participation.
The minister said the roadmap developed during the conclave will guide the strengthening of diabetes treatment within the health department. She was speaking during a meeting with senior health department officials. The health department has completed the first phase of the Ardhram annual health check-up and is conducting the second phase to detect and treat lifestyle diseases in individuals over 30 years of age. The survey revealed that 14% of people currently have diabetes, with a significant number at risk of developing the condition.
Efforts are also underway to elevate the Indian Institute of Diabetes as a research priority. The department will ensure training and technical support for addressing complications such as kidney diseases, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic foot, and peripheral neuropathy in diabetic patients.
To address lifestyle diseases early, the department is launching the Healthy Life Campaign and a school health programme to promote community-wide health awareness. tnn
