Killer app against Naxalites? Peace, not guns

Centre has been strident of late in announcing its achievements on the Naxal front. While the stats are indeed impressive, whether they will solve the Naxal problem is open to question.

Addressing a meeting of Naxal affected states on Oct 7, Union home minister Amit Shah said 85 per cent of left-wing extremists’ strength in Chhattisgarh and 14 top CPI (Maoist) leaders had been eliminated. A total of 237 Maoists had already been killed, while 812 had been arrested and 723 had surrendered this year. Naxal violence, he added, had dipped by 53 per cent during the 2014-2024 period as compared to 2004-2014.
