Malaysian prime minister Anwar Ibrahim has announced that Malaysia is preparing a draft resolution for the UN General Assembly to expel Israel from the United Nations.
“We are also studying (a proposal)… after the violation of laws, principles and UN decisions, for Israel to be expelled as a member of the UN,” Anwar told parliament in a special address on Monday.
The draft resolution is currently under negotiation and expected to be presented at the UN General Assembly for approval, which among others, proposes that Israel be removed as a member of the world body “should there be a violation of laws, rules and decisions in issues involving Palestine.”
“Strong measures, including Israel’s removal from the United Nations following Israel’s human rights violations and genocidal crimes, must be enforced as soon as possible,” he noted.
Palestinian-American activist and lawyer, Huwaida Arraf observed that the measure is expected to be deferred until next year as the credentialing committee had already approved Israel’s submission before the start of the 79th session, unless there’s a process for the credentialing committee to revoke its approval.
“While it’s clear that Israel is a persistent violator, both articles 5 and 6 require Security Council approval, which is unlikely,” Huwaida said in a post on X.
Anwar said he would present the measure at the Arab-Islamic summit convened by the Arab League in Riyadh next Monday to ensure the agenda is given attention so that the atrocities of the Israel regime can be stopped, besides allowing critical aid to reach the Palestinian people at a time when the “massacre” continues to worsen.
Last week Saudi Arabia’s foreign ministry said the joint Arab-Islamic summit on 11 will address Israeli assault in the Palestinian Territories and its expansion of military assault in Lebanon. The Ministry condemned the continued Israeli “crimes and violations” against the Palestinians, as well as the attacks in Lebanon, highlighting the serious risks posed to regional security and stability.
Anwar also extended Malaysia’s support to UNRWA in a unified stance against a recent decision by Israel’s parliament to ban the UNRWA, international mediations, and diplomatic efforts in achieving an independent and sovereign Palestine, in line with the principles of justice and peace in the Middle East.
On October 28, the Israeli Knesset passed a bill banning the UNRWA from operating in Israel. The legislation prevents UNRWA from providing crucial life support to Palestinians across Israeli-occupied Gaza and the West Bank.
