GUWAHATI: Outlawed militants launched a gun and bomb attack in Borobekra subdivision of Manipur‘s Jiribam district Saturday morning, a day after a school was burned down in Jiribam town close to the Assam border.
The attackers targeted Borobekra police station, firing indiscriminately around 5.30am. Central security forces and cops responded with counterfire, pushing the militants to flee.Reinforcements have been sent to the area, while the elderly, women and children were temporarily relocated to safer locations. Borobekra, situated 30 km from Jiribam town, is surrounded by hills and dense forests. Jiribam has a multi-ethnic demography and was untouched by the violence in Manipur that erupted in May last year. The conflict in Jiribam began on June 6 following the killing of a 59-year-old man, which led to retaliatory burning of houses belonging to both Meitei and Kuki communities.
DGP Rajiv Singh issued an appeal to the public to assist in retrieving weapons and ammunition looted from police armouries during the violence in the state last year.
