NASA has announced that a massive asteroid, 363305 (2002 NV16), is set to pass by Earth on October 24, 2024, at 9:17 PM IST. This near-Earth object (NEO), measuring 580 feet in size—comparable to a large building—will make its closest approach at a distance of 4,520,000 kilometres from Earth.

At its nearest point, 363305 (2002 NV16) will pass Earth at a distance of 4,520,000 kilometres. While this distance may seem far, it is relatively close in the vastness of space. For context, the average distance between Earth and the Moon is about 384,400 kilometres, making this asteroid’s trajectory over 11 times that distance away. Despite its classification as a “potentially hazardous asteroid” (PHA) due to its size and proximity, NASA has confirmed that 363305 (2002 NV16) will pass by safely, with no risk of impact.
