Police seize psychotropic substance in north Kashmir’s Kupwara

Srinagar, Nov 19: Police on Tuesday said they detained two individuals who they found carrying a psychotropic substance “resembling brown sugar” in Trehgam village of north Kashmir’s Kupwara.

In an official handout, police said, they established a checkpoint near Nerampora Bridge, Trehgam for routine vehicle checking,

“During the operation, a white Maruti Swift Dzire bearing registration number JK09B-3874, traveling from Nerampora towards Trehgam, was signaled to stop for inspection. However, upon noticing the Naka, the vehicle attempted to evade the checkpoint,” the handout read.

After the vehicle was intercepted, the driver identified himself as Javid Ahmad Sheikh R/O Gulgam, and the passenger revealed his named as Sajad Ahmad R/O Gulgam, the handout said.

“A search of the individuals and the vehicle was conducted, resulting in the recovery of a substance resembling brown sugar, weighing approximately 99 grams. Upon further inquiry, it was found that the apprehended individuals were actively involved in the sale of narcotics within the local area, targeting youth and contributing to the spread of drug addiction,” the handout read.

The recovered substance was seized on the spot, and a case has been registered under FIR No. 84/24 at the police station Trehgam under Section 8/21 of the NDPS Act, the handout said.
