Indian investigative journalist Rana Ayyub, who has long been a survivor of online harassment and threats by Hindutva groups, is again facing targeted online harassment after right-wing handles leaked her phone number on X, leading to continuous video calls and obscene messages in the middle of the night.
The award-winning journalist took to X stating, “It has been a traumatic night for me and my family,” tagging Maharashtra cyber security and investigation, National commission for Women and X support.
The X handle “Hindutva Knight”, allegedly run by a person named Chandan Sharma, posted her number, urging followers to text her.
Beh Lih Yi, head of the Committee to Protect Journalists Asia said that the relentless intimidation against Rana Ayyub must stop, while praising her work.
Journalists condemned the incident and urged Mumbai Police to arrest the culprits.
“Rana has been doxed & targeted again. I hope she gets the full support of the journalist community & law enforcement & I hope that hope is not in vain— in an increasingly fascist India. The impunity of violence against journalists; Palestinian, Indian, or Canadian is escalating,” said Saba Eitizaz, a journalist based in Toronto.
The unwanted publication of personal information online—known as Doxing—is an increasingly common form of digital harassment of journalists, especially female journalists.
Rana Ayyub, a persistent critic of the Modi government previously also has been subjected to organized doxing, online abuse, and violent threats including death threats from rightwing supporters.
According to an analysis of Thraets, a non-profit civic Tech research lab, “Rana Ayyub regularly receives thousands of abusive replies and mentions on Twitter.”
“Ayyub has become a primary target of disinformation campaigns on social media, with false claims accusing her of spreading misinformation or acting as a foreign agent against India—tactics aimed at damaging her credibility and deflecting from her journalism,” stated the report published in October.
