Release prisoners held without trial, end ‘overly harsh’ police verification, NC MP Ruhullah Mehdi urges CM Omar Abdullah : Valley Vision
In a letter addressed to the newly elected Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Member of Parliament and his colleague at Jammu & Kashmir National Conference, Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, has urged him to focus on important issues for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
The letter, dated 29 October, congratulates Abdullah and highlights the need for his government to align with the citizens’ wishes.
In the letter, Mehdi congratulated Abdullah and said, “This is a significant opportunity to lead with vision and integrity, and I wish you success in fulfilling the responsibilities that come with this esteemed position.”
He expressed his hope for Abdullah’s success in fulfilling the responsibilities of the esteemed position. “As you embark on this journey, it is crucial to respect the people’s mandate and to align your government’s actions with the aspirations of the citizens. In this regard, while I am sure that you will address the political issue through the legislature/ assembly.” he wrote in the letter.
Among the pressing issues highlighted, Mehdi urged the Chief Minister to focus on the release of prisoners held without trial, saying that it is “an urgent matter” that must be prioritised to ensure justice and uphold the rule of law. “Your government should prioritise efforts to facilitate their release, ensuring justice and upholding the rule of law. This action would resonate deeply with those who value fairness and due process,” the letter read.
Additionally, the MP called for a rationalisation of reservation policies, stressing the need for a balanced approach that supports deserving sections of society while maintaining merit-based opportunities. “A balanced approach that supports deserving sections of society while maintaining open merit is necessary to foster an inclusive environment. Rationalising these policies can promote social equity without compromising the standards of excellence,” Mehdi wrote in the letter.
Mehdi also pointed to the swift filling of government vacancies as a vital step to provide employment opportunities for thousands, bolstering the local economy and reducing unemployment rates.
As winter approaches, he urged action on electricity tariffs and supply, advocating for a reduction in high tariffs that burden consumers. “Reducing these tariffs and ensuring a stable supply of electricity will help families withstand the harsh winter conditions,” read the letter.
Lastly, the MP raised concerns about the existing verification processes, describing them as “overly harsh” and calling for a reconsideration to ensure fairness for all applicants. “The existing verification process/procedure are overly harsh and often penalize individuals for actions they did not commit. This procedure should be reconsidered to ensure they are fair and just for all applicants,” he wrote.
He added: “I hope you consider these suggestions as you work to meet the expectations of the people. Your leadership has the potential to pave the way for a progressive and just administration.”
Waheed Para, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) youth president, quoted the letter on X and wrote, “Amid growing concerns over NC’s passive stance on key political issues, we commend @RuhullahMehdi’s courage in reminding both NC and the Chief Minister of their promises to the people.”
“Let’s hope NC heeds this call from its Srinagar MP and honors the people’s mandate,” he added.
