‘Superman’ trailer: James Gunn unveils a bloodied David Corenswet, familiar allies, and new DC faces
The first teaser for Superman, is finally here, gives us a fresh new glimpse into James Gunn’s vision for the Man of Steel’s return to the big screen. Starring David Corenswet as Superman, the trailer introduces a battered hero struggling in an expansive, superhero-filled world.
As Gunn’s inaugural film in the new DC Universe, Superman promises a “fully lived-in world” where iconic characters like Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), and Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo) exist alongside new cinematic debuts, such as Krypto the Superdog. In a standout moment, the iconic canine hero rescues a bloodied Superman after he crashes into arctic ice.
The trailer also teases appearances by Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as the brash Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as the winged Hawkgirl, and Anthony Corrigan as Metamorpho. Gunn emphasized his intent to embrace the full spectrum of Superman’s mythology, blending the traditional with fresh storytelling elements.
“This Superman lives in a world with superheroes,” Gunn stated during a Q&A following the teaser’s premiere. He highlighted his efforts to balance the fantastical and grounded aspects of the DC Universe, while rooting the film in themes of goodness and human kindness.
The teaser nods to nostalgia with a modern reimagining of John Williams’ iconic 1978 Superman theme. Composer John Murphy, known for The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, collaborated early in the film’s production to craft a score that blends classic and contemporary tones.
Superman is set to soar into theaters on July 11
