Rafat Abmohimid, a Syrian refugee, and his 11-month-old son have reportedly been victims of an acid attack in Vikaspuri, Delhi West.

Reports indicate that a group of local assailants “intentionally targeted” them with corrosive substances during a confrontation.

Both Rafat and his son were taken to Safdarjung Hospital for emergency care, and an FIR was filed on Monday, as per a report by Times of India.

The attack occurred on 30 September while Rafat and his son were mistreated by individuals as his wife Marisa used a public toilet. When the assailants approached with cans of the acid, Rafat detected a toxic smell and attempted to flee but was unable to escape. The attackers then threw acid on them and fled. In pain from the chemical burns, Rafat held onto his son and sought help from bystanders and auto rickshaws. Eventually, a motorcyclist stopped to assist and took them to the hospital for treatment, reads the report.

Two years ago, Rafat lost his first child in a road accident in Bangaluru.

According to documents, Rafat has been recognised as a Syrian national, while his wife Marisa is a 26-year-old from Thailand. The couple has been living on the road in front of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) office in the Vikaspuri area of Delhi West, but their presence has angered local residents.

After losing his job at a call center, Rafat has been looking for work to support his family and maintain a simple life in India. They also reached out to the UNHCR for humanitarian assistance, but their efforts have been unsuccessful. “We are refugees, and the only place we can think of for assistance is UNHCR,” he told TOI when asked about the details, as per the report.
