The Crucial Role of Mental Health, ET HealthWorld
Hyderabad: Experts at an awareness session held at the Nizam’s institute of medical sciences (NIMS), in collaboration with the Telangana state chapter of the research society for the study of diabetes in India (TS-RSSDI), emphasized the significant mental health challenges faced by diabetes patients.
“People living with diabetes face daily difficulties in managing their condition at home, work, and school. According to an IDF survey, 77% of individuals with diabetes experience mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. Additionally, 4 out of 5 individuals report feelings of diabetes burnout. A 2020 study conducted at NIMS found that 28% of diabetes patients reported moderate to severe diabetes distress,” said Dr N Bheerappa, Director of NIMS. He added that support from family, healthcare workers, and the community is essential in helping individuals manage their condition.
“It is essential to address mental health concerns alongside glycemic management. A holistic approach is necessary to improve physical, mental, and social well-being of those living with diabetes,” Dr Bheerappa said.
