A WhatsApp group named “Mallu Hindu Officers,” allegedly administered by Kerala Industry and Commerce Department Director K. Gopalakrishnan IAS, briefly appeared over the weekend before being deleted within hours.

This group, reportedly created exclusively for Malayali IAS officers, included eleven senior officials from Kerala’s administrative services, raising widespread alarm over the perceived sectarian nature of the group.

The group’s existence came to light on Saturday when some officers, after being added to it, expressed immediate concern to Gopalakrishnan, leading to its swift deletion.

The news was initially broken by Media One TV, which reported the group’s appearance and its quick deletion following concerns raised by some officers.

In a subsequent explanation, Gopalakrishnan claimed his phone had been hacked and that the WhatsApp group was created without his knowledge. He reportedly sent a message to the involved officials asserting that his device had been compromised, and he later filed a formal complaint with the cyber cell, seeking an investigation into the alleged hacking incident.

The message from K. Gopalakrishnan read: “Dear all, it appears that someone has taken control of my mobile device, creating 11 groups and adding all my contacts. I have uninstalled the app, manually removed the groups from my WhatsApp, and will be changing my phone soon.” The message was marked with the subject line, “Important Notice.”

This incident has surfaced against a backdrop of rising tensions regarding Hindutva affiliations within the Kerala administration. Recently, ADGP Ajith Kumar faced scrutiny over his alleged ties with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), while three former Director Generals of Police have joined the Bharatiya Janata Party, sparking debates on political alignment within law enforcement ranks.

Critics argue that any indication of bias within the state’s administrative cadre threatens to undermine the trust of Kerala’s diverse populace, with potential repercussions for the state’s social fabric.
