World Hepatitis day – “Its Time for Action- Test, Treat and Vaccinate“

Dharamshala: World Hepatitis Day is observed annually on 28 July to raise awareness on hepatitis, which is an inflammation of the liver caused by variety of infectious viruses and non infectious agents leading to health problems some of which can be fatal. This years theme on world hepatitis emphasise the urgent need for swift and decisive measures to tackle hepatitis on a global scale “Its time for action- Test, Treat and Vaccinate “. As per latest estimates by WHO, 40 million people are chronically infected with hepatitis B in India.

The Department of Health under its Hepatitis B program Funded by the PRM ensures that the exile Tibetan community have access to Hepatitis B Screening, treatment, Follow up and vaccines throughout the year and in addition, world hepatitis day is observed on 28th July every year to highlight the disease which is preventable and treatable through its network of hospitals, PHCs and clinics. This year the awareness on Hepatitis in the Tibetan communities were promoted through sports such as basketball, volleyball, and badminton competitions while some organised traditional Tibetan circle dances, drawing competition and presentations including short videos. Informative Billboards and posters were also stuck at public spaces to spread the message.

The department also hosted a panel discussion in collaboration with TMAI and Delek hospital. Doctors representing traditional Sorig and Allopathic medicines discussed the disease through their lens on its prevention, treatment and transmission. The discussion also featured Hepatitis B burden of the exile Tibetan community as well as available services/provisions for Hepatitis under the department. The discussion was aired on 28th July through the Tibet TV.
