‘Yellow Alert’ Issued for Jan 5-6 with Snowfall, Heavy Rains Expected




   

SRINAGAR: The local Meteorological department has issued a ‘yellow alert’ for January 5 and 6, predicting heavy rain and snowfall in isolated areas during this period.

The MeT department has warned that there is a possibility of heavy rain and snowfall at isolated locations. “The disruption of traffic on higher reaches, snow avalanches, landslides, and shooting stones are expected on January 5 and 6,” the MeT said.

In its detailed forecast, the weatherman stated that on January 3, the weather is expected to remain generally cloudy, with the possibility of light snow in isolated higher reaches.

From January 4 to 6, Director of MeT, Mukhtar Ahmad, said that a moderate to strong Western Disturbance (WD) is expected, and under its influence, there is a possibility of light to moderate rain in the plains of Jammu and snow at most places in J&K, with peak activity expected during the night of January 4 to late night on January 5, and into the morning of January 6, with improvement from the afternoon.

He added that generally cloudy and dry weather is expected from January 7 to 10, and from January 11 to 12, generally cloudy weather is expected, with the possibility of light snow at isolated places.

In its advisory, the MeT has stated that, in view of fresh snowfall, sub-freezing temperatures, and icy conditions over roads in both plains and higher reaches, tourists, travellers, and transporters are advised to plan accordingly and follow the administration and traffic advisories.

“There is a possibility of heavy snow at isolated higher reaches from the night of January 4 to late night on January 5,” the advisory reads.

Furthermore, the night temperatures continue to settle below freezing point in Kashmir. Srinagar, the summer capital of J&K, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 2.4°C, while Kupwara recorded a minimum of 1.4°C.

However, Gulmarg, a famous ski resort, recorded a low of minus 8.6°C, while Pahalgam, a popular tourist destination, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 4.0°C. Qazigund, a gateway to Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 5.2°C, while Kokernag in South Kashmir recorded minus 5.8°C. (KNO)
